It’s that time of the year again, the time to take a breather from hunting whitetail and turn our focus toward those springtime Virginia gobblers. When scouting for turkey in the late winter, I always keep my eyes peeled for whitetail sheds. This year I haven’t had any luck finding any missing antlers, but this weekend was a different story.
Over the weekend, my landlord came by to work on a few home improvement projects. While we were taking a break, he wanted to take a walk onto his property into the woods to look at a natural spring and a cave. I stayed at the house to finish the work. Upon his return, he walked inside the house and said he had recovered a rare find. On the porch laid a whitetail skull with a broad head pierced right through the brain. After getting a closer look, I could tell that the antlers had been sawed off. He found the carcass near the road, our best guess was that someone laser-sighted him from the road and then quickly sawed off the horns. The possibilities are endless.
Regardless of how the buck was taken, somebody had some dead-eye aim and it’s a sure bet the deer didn’t go far.
